How to Audit Your Wardrobe for the New Year!
As we step into January 2025, the energy of a fresh start fills the air. The New Year whispers promises of change, growth, and the opportunity to redefine who we are. And what better way to embrace this chapter than by starting with your wardrobe? After all, the way you dress speaks volumes about how you feel about yourself and the direction you’re headed.
But before you go on a shopping spree or blindly cling to old habits, let’s take a step back and do something game-changing: a wardrobe audit.
Why Audit Your Wardrobe?
Your wardrobe is more than just clothing. It’s a reflection of your identity, your goals, and the confidence you’re projecting to the world. By auditing your wardrobe, you create space—physically and mentally—for the person you’re becoming. Think of it as an activation point, a moment of clarity where you’re choosing alignment over clutter.
I’ve done this myself multiple times. From my transition as a basketball player to a fashion stylist, from running a skincare line to embracing my coaching business, my wardrobe has evolved with me. And now, as a new mom and bride-to-be, I’ve never been more intentional about ensuring my closet matches my mindset.
Here’s how you can do the same.
Step 1: Define Your Vision for the Year
Before touching a single hanger, ask yourself: Who am I becoming this year? Are you stepping into leadership, embracing a more creative life, or prioritizing self-care? Clarity is key. Write down three words that capture the essence of your vision. For example, mine are: Bold, Intentional, Effortless.
Now, consider whether your current wardrobe reflects those words. If not, don’t worry—we’re about to change that.
Step 2: The Edit
It’s time to dive into your closet. Divide your clothing into three categories:
Keep: Items you love, wear often, and align with your vision.
Donate/Sell: Pieces that no longer serve you, whether they don’t fit, are outdated, or simply don’t bring you joy.
Maybe: Items you’re unsure about. Try them on, ask yourself if they reflect the future you, and decide from there.
Pro Tip: Be ruthless. If it doesn’t spark confidence or match your goals, it’s time to let it go. Holding onto items out of guilt or nostalgia only holds you back.
Step 3: Identify Gaps
Once you’ve decluttered, you’ll likely notice areas where your wardrobe feels incomplete. Maybe you need more versatile basics, power pieces for work, or outfits that fit your new lifestyle (hello, chic mom vibes!). Make a list of these gaps so you can shop intentionally, rather than impulsively.
For example, when I became a mom, I realized I needed clothing that balanced comfort and style—pieces I could throw on quickly yet still feel put-together in. Now, my wardrobe includes soft yet structured blazers, elevated loungewear, and effortless midi dresses.
Step 4: Organize for Success
A curated wardrobe deserves a curated space. Arrange your clothing in a way that makes getting dressed enjoyable. Group similar items together (e.g., blouses, dresses, pants), and invest in matching hangers or clear storage bins if needed.
Pro Tip: Place your most-worn pieces front and center for easy access. This small change can make a big difference in your daily routine.
Step 5: Incorporate Style Rituals
Auditing your wardrobe is about more than just clothes—it’s about creating a mindset shift. Make it a ritual to check in with your style regularly. Schedule a mini audit every quarter, and keep a vision board or Pinterest folder for outfit inspiration.
And don’t forget the power of self-care. The way you feel about yourself starts from within. Practices like journaling, prayer, or meditation can help you align your inner confidence with your outer style.
As you stand in front of your newly edited wardrobe, take a moment to appreciate the progress you’ve made. This is an activation point: a moment where you’ve chosen to step into your next chapter with clarity and intention.
Your wardrobe is now a toolkit for confidence, a reflection of your goals, and a daily reminder of the empowered woman you are becoming. So, here’s to starting 2025 with a closet that’s as ambitious as you are.
